My first interest in researching our family history stems from the stories I heard about my great-grandmother Ellen Wilson Hemingway, who began life as Ellen Fozzard.

"She was a mannequin - disowned by her rich parents - her family were mill and ship owners - her mother was driven about in a carriage".

Well, she was certainly a dressmaker (and therefore maybe also a mannequin?) but connections with the mill owning Fozzards of Dewsbury have not been substantiated...however, by this time, my appetite had been whetted and I became well and truly hooked.

It was the beginning of an amazing journey into the past and I am still travelling.

Acnowledgements:

I am grateful to the armies of researchers and transcribers who have published vital information on the internet - the secondary sources that helped me when I got stuck and prompted me where to look next. They have opened up doors I never knew were there.

With thanks to Linda Davison and Deb Walker, who generously shared their (our) Sheard family history with me...also to Elizabeth Gardiner, whose help with the Archer line has already been invaluable.
